Medication Genetic Testing (Pharmacogenomics) for Personalized Mental Health Care

Medication genetic testing (pharmacogenomic / PGx testing) uses DNA-guided insights to help your clinician understand how your body may process certain psychiatric medications. At Wholesome Clinic, we offer GeneSight testing to support personalized, evidence-based mental health care.

How to book: Medication genetic testing is typically discussed and ordered during a New Mental Health Visit when clinically appropriate. If you already completed testing and need to review results, book a Follow-up Mental Health Visit.
Expectation setting: PGx testing can reduce trial-and-error, but it does not guarantee a perfect medication match. Results are used alongside your symptoms, history, and clinical evaluation.

What Is Pharmacogenomic (PGx) Testing?

Medication Genetic Testing (pharmacogenomic / PGx) uses a small DNA sample to analyze how your body may metabolize and respond to certain psychiatric medications. This can help your clinician make more informed medication and dosing decisions - especially if you’ve had side effects, limited benefit, or multiple medication trials.

The test is simple and painless (cheek swab) and can typically be completed in minutes.

Why Medication Genetic Testing Matters

  • Helps identify medications your body may tolerate better
  • May reduce trial-and-error in selecting psychiatric medications
  • May decrease the risk of side effects
  • Supports safer dose adjustments
  • Provides additional data for long-term treatment planning

Who Is a Good Candidate?

  • Anyone starting a new psychiatric medication
  • Individuals who have tried multiple medications without success
  • Patients who experience frequent or severe side effects
  • Those with a family history of medication sensitivity
  • Patients seeking more personalized treatment guidance

How the Test Works

  1. Book a New Mental Health Visit: We review your history, current medications, and goals and decide if PGx testing is appropriate.
  2. Swab collection: A simple cheek swab is completed in-office or through a mailed kit.
  3. Lab analysis: Your DNA is analyzed for medication metabolism and drug-gene interactions.
  4. Report received: A detailed report is delivered to your provider.
  5. Results review: We review your report during a Follow-up Mental Health Visit and adjust your plan when clinically appropriate.
Timing: Results are often available within 7–10 business days, though timing can vary.

Conditions That May Benefit

Testing is not required for everyone. We’ll recommend it when it’s likely to meaningfully inform medication decisions.

What Your Report includes

  • Medication categories to support decision-making
  • Drug-gene interactions
  • Metabolism insights (how quickly or slowly your body processes certain medications)
  • Side effect risk considerations (when available in the report)
  • Guidance that may support dosing decisions
  • Clinician-reviewed results with clear next steps
  • Supports safer, more personalized medication planning

Insurance & Self-Pay

Many commercial insurance plans cover or partially cover pharmacogenomic testing, depending on your plan and medical necessity. Coverage varies.

Self-pay maximum (per GeneSight): If your test is not covered by insurance, GeneSight states the most any patient will pay is $330. Patient responsibility can vary based on insurance review and eligibility. Learn more at www.genesight.com.

What to Expect (Billing & Insurance)

  1. We submit your insurance information when the test is ordered.
  2. When you receive your kit, we recommend calling GeneSight to confirm any coverage or billing questions.
  3. We review results during a Follow-up Mental Health Visit and adjust treatment when clinically appropriate.

Note: Wholesome Clinic does not control insurance determinations or GeneSight billing policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is genetic medication testing painful?

No. It uses a simple cheek swab that typically takes less than a minute.

How long do results take?

Results are often available within 7–10 business days, though timing can vary.

Can this test tell me which medication will work 100%?

No. PGx testing does not guarantee a perfect match, but it can provide useful data to reduce trial-and-error.

Do I still need regular appointments?

Yes. PGx testing supports medication planning, but follow-ups are still needed to monitor response and adjust care.

Ready to Learn If Medication Genetic Testing Is Right for You?

Start with a New Mental Health Visit. We’ll review your history and discuss whether PGx testing is appropriate. If you already completed testing, schedule a Follow-up Mental Health Visit for results review.
