Psychiatry & Mental Health
General information to help you understand options and next steps.
1. What is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and what do they do?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice
registered nurse who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions.
At Wholesome Clinic, our PMHNP holds dual-board certification in psychiatry and
family practice and is licensed in seven states (TX, CO, NM, OK, LA, AR, OR), providing
comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and evidence-based
mental health care. PMHNPs can diagnose and treat conditions like depression, anxiety,
ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and insomnia, and prescribe medications to help manage
symptoms.
2. Can a psychiatric provider prescribe weight loss medication?
Not all psychiatric providers can — but at Wholesome Clinic, our provider holds dual-board
certification as both a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and a Family
Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The FNP credential covers primary and family practice, which
includes medical weight loss and GLP-1 therapy. This dual certification is what makes
integrated care possible here — mental health and weight management under one provider,
without needing a separate referral. Care includes lab-guided evaluation, medication
management, nutrition support, and ongoing monitoring.

3. How much does psychiatric care cost?
Costs vary depending on whether you use insurance or self-pay. At Wholesome Clinic:
Insurance: We accept most major plans (Aetna, Tricare, Medicaid,
Humana, Cigna, United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and many others). Your cost
depends on your plan's copay and deductible. Self-Pay: Our Brief
Mental Health self-pay visits are $75/month for adults — making
psychiatric care accessible to everyone.
4. Do you accept insurance?
Yes. Wholesome Clinic accepts most major commercial insurance plans, including: Aetna,
Tricare, Texas Medicaid, Humana, Cigna, Oxford, Superior Health Plan, United
Healthcare, Ambetter, Meritain, Texas Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, GEHA, Nippon,
Oscar, Optum, UMR, Surest, and Multiplan. We also help with prior authorization and
documentation for treatments like Spravato. If you're unsure whether your plan is
accepted, call us at 972-905-9435 and our team will verify coverage.
5. What is your $75 Brief Mental Health Self-Pay?
Our $75 Brief Mental Health Self-Pay is designed for adults who need psychiatric care
but don't have insurance or prefer self-pay options. For just $75/month, you get:
brief psychiatric evaluation, medication management, follow-up appointments, access to
our dual-board certified PMHNP/FNP, and personalized, evidence-based care. No

8. How do I know if I need to see a psychiatric provider?

difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, loss of interest in activities you enjoy,
substance use concerns, thoughts of self-harm, relationship or work difficulties
related to mental health, or questions about medications and side effects.

9. What's the difference between a therapist and a psychiatric prescriber?
Therapist: Provides talk therapy and counseling, helps you process
emotions, and develop coping strategies. PMHNP / Psychiatric prescriber:
Diagnoses mental health conditions, prescribes medications, and manages treatment over
time. Many patients benefit from both.
10. How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation typically takes
about 45 minutes
and includes mental health history, current symptoms, medical history, treatment
options, diagnostic assessment, and treatment plan development. Standard follow-up
appointments are typically about 30 minutes; an extended follow-up can last up to 45
minutes.
