Our Approach to Adult ADHD Evaluation

ADHD is a real condition that significantly impacts daily functioning. We are committed to providing thorough, evidence-based evaluations. However, screening tools like QB Check are supportive but not diagnostic on their own — they must be interpreted alongside clinical history, symptom presentation, and corroborating information. QB Check is an FDA-cleared computerized test used in many ADHD evaluations worldwide.

Computerized ADHD Testing (QBCheck)

In some cases, we may use a computerized ADHD assessment called QBCheck to provide additional objective data about attention, impulsivity, and activity patterns.

What to Expect

Our Adult ADHD evaluation process includes the following components:

QbCheck ADHD testing computerized assessment
  • QB Check computerized assessment ($150, typically completed before the evaluation appointment so your provider can review the results in advance; in some cases it may be completed after the initial visit and reviewed at a follow-up appointment). Learn more about QBCheck computerized ADHD testing.
  • Clinical interview to assess current symptoms and childhood history
  • Standardized screening questionnaires (Adult Self-Report Scale, Wender Utah Rating Scale)
  • Review of corroborating documentation (see below)

Important: A single screening tool does not establish an ADHD diagnosis. All results are interpreted within the context of your complete clinical picture.

Our ADHD services focus on comprehensive evaluation and individualized, evidence-based treatment planning. Treatment recommendations may include behavioral strategies, non-stimulant medications, or referrals for stimulant medications when clinically appropriate.

Corroborating Documentation Required

To support an accurate diagnosis, we require at least ONE of the following:

  • Medical records from prior ADHD diagnosis or treatment
  • School records or report cards from childhood
  • A parent, sibling, or family member who can describe your childhood symptoms
  • Spouse or partner who can describe current functioning
If you have been previously diagnosed with ADHD or treated with ADHD medication, please obtain those medical records before your evaluation appointment.

How the ADHD Testing & Evaluation Process Works

1. Request ADHD Testing

Use the calendar below to request ADHD testing. After submitting your request, our office will send an invoice for the QB Check assessment ($150).

2. Complete QB Check Assessment

Once payment is received, you will receive instructions to complete the QB Check computerized ADHD assessment. This test measures attention, impulsivity, and activity level.

3. Schedule Your Evaluation Visit

After completing the assessment, you may schedule an appointment to review results and discuss your symptoms, history, and any supporting documentation.

4. Review Results & Treatment Options

During your appointment, your provider will interpret the assessment results within the context of your clinical history and discuss diagnosis and treatment options if appropriate.

Our Treatment Approach

ADHD treatment is individualized. Following a comprehensive evaluation, treatment recommendations may include behavioral strategies, lifestyle modifications, psychotherapy, non-stimulant medications, or referrals for stimulant medications when clinically appropriate.

Stimulant medications are not appropriate for every patient. When considered, they are prescribed only after a thorough diagnostic evaluation, careful assessment of medical and psychiatric factors, and ongoing monitoring in accordance with our evidence-based clinical protocol.

At this time, we refer patients for stimulant medication management when appropriate. Patients will continue to have access to comprehensive ADHD evaluations and individualized non-stimulant treatment options through our practice when clinically appropriate.

A diagnosis of ADHD does not automatically mean medication is recommended. Treatment decisions are based on clinical findings, functional impairment, safety considerations, patient preferences, and individualized goals of care.

Please note:
  • Stimulant medication is not recommended or prescribed for every patient diagnosed with ADHD.
  • A comprehensive evaluation is required before any medication recommendations are made.
  • Referral for stimulant medication management is currently available when appropriate.
  • Our patients will continue to receive comprehensive ADHD evaluations and individualized non-stimulant treatment recommendations.

Comprehensive Psychological & Neuropsychological Testing

Most patients can be evaluated through a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, with objective testing such as QbCheck used when clinically appropriate. In some situations, however, additional psychological or neuropsychological testing may be recommended to further clarify the diagnosis or evaluate coexisting conditions.

Additional testing may be recommended when:

  • The diagnosis remains unclear after a comprehensive clinical evaluation.
  • Learning disorders, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, or other cognitive conditions are suspected.
  • There are complex psychiatric or neurological conditions that may affect diagnostic accuracy.
  • Additional objective information is needed to guide diagnosis or treatment planning.
  • Schools, employers, disability programs, or other third parties require formal neuropsychological documentation.

When appropriate, we can provide referrals to qualified psychologists or neuropsychologists for comprehensive testing. Insurance coverage varies by plan and clinical indication.

How Adult ADHD Evaluation Differs From Pediatric ADHD Diagnosis

ADHD evaluation differs between adults and children because adults must rely more heavily on self-reported symptoms and historical information. In contrast, children can be observed in structured environments such as school where teachers and caregivers provide additional insight.

Original Component Adults Children
Clinical Interview Yes Parent interview + child observation
Rating Scales Self-report scales Parent and teacher rating scales
School Information Usually unavailable Teacher input and school records often reviewed
Computerized Testing (QB Check) Commonly used Optional in specific situations
Psychological Testing Rarely required Recommended if learning disabilities or complex conditions are suspected
Treatment Options Medication and behavioral strategies Behavioral strategies, school accommodations, and medication when appropriate

Frequently Asked Questions

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects concentration, impulse control, and activity level. Symptoms typically begin in childhood and can continue into adulthood. Adults with ADHD may struggle with organization, completing tasks, time management, and maintaining focus at work or home.

Many people experience occasional difficulty with focus or organization. ADHD is diagnosed when these symptoms are persistent, began in childhood (before age 12), occur across multiple settings (home, work, school), and cause significant impairment in daily functioning. A thorough clinical evaluation is needed to determine if symptoms meet diagnostic criteria.

Yes. Many adults were not diagnosed as children, particularly if they had the inattentive type (without hyperactivity) or developed coping strategies that masked their symptoms. However, ADHD symptoms must have been present in childhood, even if they were not recognized at the time.

QB Check is a 20-minute computerized test that measures attention, impulsivity, and activity level. It provides objective data that supports — but does not replace — clinical evaluation. QB Check is one piece of the diagnostic puzzle, not a standalone diagnostic tool.

No single test can diagnose ADHD. Screening tools like QB Check help guide diagnosis but must be interpreted alongside your clinical history, symptom presentation, and corroborating information. This is why we also use questionnaires (ASRS, Wender Utah Rating Scale) and conduct a clinical interview.

This is a thorough evaluation lasting about 2–6 hours, conducted by a psychologist or neuropsychologist. It assesses attention, memory, processing speed, and other cognitive functions. It also includes validity measures that confirm the accuracy of symptom reporting. This testing is more definitive than screening tools like QB Check.

Most patients can be evaluated through a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, with QbCheck used as one component of the diagnostic process when clinically appropriate. In some situations, however, additional psychological or neuropsychological testing may be recommended to help clarify the diagnosis, evaluate coexisting conditions, or provide more detailed cognitive assessment. This decision is based on each patient's individual clinical presentation and is not required for every person undergoing an ADHD evaluation.

ADHD is a lifelong condition that begins in childhood. Corroborating documentation — such as prior medical records, school records, or input from family members — helps confirm that symptoms were present before age 12 and supports an accurate diagnosis. Self-report alone has limitations, and additional sources of information strengthen the evaluation.

At this time, stimulant medication management is not offered through our practice. We provide comprehensive ADHD evaluations and individualized treatment plans, which may include behavioral strategies, non-stimulant medications, and other evidence-based interventions. If stimulant medication is determined to be the most appropriate treatment, we will discuss referral options with you.

Yes. Non-stimulant medications such as atomoxetine (Strattera), viloxazine (Qelbree), guanfacine ER (Intuniv), and others are evidence-based treatment options for ADHD and are effective for many individuals. Although they may take several weeks to reach their full effect, they can provide meaningful improvement in attention, focus, impulsivity, and overall functioning. Treatment recommendations are individualized based on your symptoms, medical history, treatment goals, and clinical needs.

ADHD treatment is individualized and may require adjustments over time. If your symptoms do not improve sufficiently or you experience side effects, we will reassess your diagnosis, treatment response, and overall clinical picture. Depending on your individual needs, adjustments may include medication changes, behavioral strategies, additional evaluation, or other evidence-based treatment options.

If you have documentation of a prior diagnosis (medical records, psychological testing reports), please provide these to our office. Prior records can support your current evaluation and may allow us to proceed more quickly. Without documentation, we may need to conduct a full evaluation.

If possible, we recommend obtaining records from your previous healthcare provider or pharmacy, as they can provide valuable information about your diagnosis and prior treatment. If records are unavailable, we can still perform a comprehensive ADHD evaluation. In some cases, additional testing, collateral information, or records may be recommended to help clarify the diagnosis and guide treatment decisions.

Prior records confirm your diagnosis and document your treatment history, including which medications you tried and how you responded. This information helps us provide better care and supports any future prescribing decisions.

Contact our office to schedule an initial appointment. Please review the information on this page about documentation requirements before your visit.

Any prior medical records related to ADHD diagnosis or treatment, school records or report cards from childhood (if available), contact information for a family member who can describe your childhood symptoms, a list of current medications, and completed questionnaires (if sent to you before your appointment).

After your evaluation is complete, we will schedule a follow-up visit to review the findings, discuss your diagnosis, and develop an individualized treatment plan. If ADHD is confirmed, we will discuss the treatment options that are most appropriate for your needs, which may include behavioral strategies, non-stimulant medications, referral for stimulant medications when clinically appropriate, or a combination of approaches.
